• Paint or Coating Concerns In the past few years this has recently become a big concern. Since 2007 more than 100 toy lines have been recalled due to lead found in the paint. However, there are other coatings that are harmful as well.

What to do? – read the labels, check with US Consumer Product Safety Commission, and/or other groups, such as Good Guides to make sure that the product is considered safe. Linseed and walnut oil are among the safest coatings for wooden toys.

• Imperfections Unfinished wooden toys should be checked for imperfections, such as rough edges or the potential for splintering.

What to do? – check the toy to make sure that the surface is smooth, not splintered. If possible rough areas are found, they can be fixed by light sanding. However, if many such imperfections are found, exchange the toy for one without these imperfections.

• Cleanliness All new toys should be wiped with a damp cloth before the child plays with the toy, as the toys have been handled by many people before being wrapped and shipped to the retailer.

What to do? - wipe the toy with a damp cloth before giving it to the child to play with.

Used Wooden Toys

As wooden toys are so durable, they are often last through the use of several siblings as well as from generation to generation. The same precautions should be taken with used wooden toys as for new wooden toys, with a few extra steps.

• Paint or Coating Concerns

Check the toy for any paint peeling that a child might peel off and ingest.

• Imperfections There may be more imperfections with a used toy as for a new toy. Again, make sure that the toy is smooth, which may include light sanding.

• Cleanliness A used toy should be washed with soap and water as dirt and baby saliva can get into the pores of the wood if it is natural wood. The soap will disinfect the wood.

With the economy as it is today, we know that thing are getting tougher and we should cut back on our spending but children have no concept of this. They only know what they like and want regardless of the price. Wearing uniforms can solve that problem for parents.

If our children had to wear school uniforms then we wouldn’t have to go around buying clothes to match. We can spend all day looking for tops to match jeans and this can be exhausting. With uniforms, everything we need is right there in one place.

It takes getting use to wearing uniforms, so it is important that we encourage our children about it. Let them know that they don’t look bad in them and other children are wearing the same thing. They won’t stand out from the rest.

We can dress up the uniforms a bit like putting on a decorative belt or jacket but we must stay in line with the school guild line so we have to be sure of what we can do. Children easily adapts so don’t worry, they’ll get use to them and probably grow to enjoy them. They’ll wee that they won’t have to worry about finding something to match, just pick the colors for that day and be done with it. Life will become a lot easier for them.

The color you choose for your child’s bed room, for your toddler’s bedding, is incredibly important, it can go so far as to affect their health and emotions.
