Wooden Toys – Some Things Never Go Out of Style

Comments Off

The world has changed quite a bit over the past few decades, and so have the toys children play with. Sometimes it seems that video games have replaced a lot of the more conventional toys, and that every toy today must beep, buzz, blink or even talk to earn a place in a child’s toy chest. To some extent that’s true, but there are also toys that never seem to change. Many classic board games remain as popular as ever, certain action figures and dolls never seem to go out of style, and generation after generation of kids love their wooden toys.

Yes, wooden toys. Far from being obsolete, wood toys continue to delight kids of all ages. They are simple, solid, fun. If you buy quality toys for children, you give them something they can enjoy for years rather than disposable plastic toys that quickly break and fall apart. Natural toys are great for infants and small children because they don’t have sharp edges and corners that can cut and hurt, and there aren’t any small pieces that can come off and choke a child. And kids love the smooth finish of wooden toys and their simple, stylized shapes.

Among the favorite traditional wooden toys are train sets, trucks, wagons and other things the child can push, pull, load, unload, and maneuver around. Kids can get lost playing in their fantasy worlds for hours at a time. These classic toys and sets come in all sizes, and they are safe to use with lead-free paints. Most are made right here in the USA, often by local artisans and small businesses that make them with great care and pride.

There is also a wealth of wooden educational toys. They range from nameboard puzzles with large colorful letters to puzzles and all sorts of games. There are also things like wooden sewing cards that are perfect for learning the alphabet and teaching hand-eye coordination. As we get older we tend to forget the many stages of development a small child goes through. The ability to stack blocks, sort them by color and size, or arrange them in certain ways all represent milestones in a child’s mental and physical development.

While iPods are ubiquitous these days, there’s a slew of wonderful handcrafted toys that make generate noises and sounds that delight children. Compared to electronic toys that can tax the nerves of parents and attending adults, the clacking sounds of wooden toys and rattles are downright soothing.

While we generally think of wooden toys as geared toward the younger crowd, some are intricate and detailed enough for older kids and even adults. Many artfully crafted wooden toys end up as collections. And their simple, elegant construction often motivates kids to try their own hand at building and creating things. Who knows, perhaps that child playing with a wooden tool chest will grow up to become a master mechanic.

The bottom line is that wooden toys will never go out of style. Wood is natural, elegant, durable and safe. It’s the perfect material for all sorts of toys, and wooden toys should always have their place in children’s toy boxes.

Wooden Toy Safety

Comments Off

Who doesn’t have a memory of a favorite wooden toy – perhaps made by Dad or Grandpa. While these toys are generally considered safe, at least compared to toys made of plastic, there are still areas of concern.

New Wood Toys

• Paint or Coating Concerns In the past few years this has recently become a big concern. Since 2007 more than 100 toy lines have been recalled due to lead found in the paint. However, there are other coatings that are harmful as well.

What to do? – read the labels, check with US Consumer Product Safety Commission, and/or other groups, such as Good Guides to make sure that the product is considered safe. Linseed and walnut oil are among the safest coatings for wooden toys.

• Imperfections Unfinished wooden toys should be checked for imperfections, such as rough edges or the potential for splintering.

What to do? – check the toy to make sure that the surface is smooth, not splintered. If possible rough areas are found, they can be fixed by light sanding. However, if many such imperfections are found, exchange the toy for one without these imperfections.

• Cleanliness All new toys should be wiped with a damp cloth before the child plays with the toy, as the toys have been handled by many people before being wrapped and shipped to the retailer.

What to do? - wipe the toy with a damp cloth before giving it to the child to play with.

Used Wooden Toys

As wooden toys are so durable, they are often last through the use of several siblings as well as from generation to generation. The same precautions should be taken with used wooden toys as for new wooden toys, with a few extra steps.

• Paint or Coating Concerns

Check the toy for any paint peeling that a child might peel off and ingest.

What to do? – Remove any peeling paint and sand.

• Imperfections There may be more imperfections with a used toy as for a new toy. Again, make sure that the toy is smooth, which may include light sanding.

• Cleanliness A used toy should be washed with soap and water as dirt and baby saliva can get into the pores of the wood if it is natural wood. The soap will disinfect the wood.
